Why is Port Townsend a preserved Victorian seaport?
During the late 1800s, there was speculation that the city would be the biggest port in the Northwest. A building boom between 1885 and 1891 produced a waterfront of three-story brick buildings and elaborate Victorian houses in uptown that remain today.
The seafaring life supported many bawdy activities. Port Townsend was one of the most notorious ports in the west, sporting 40 saloons, 17 brothels and many gambling dens. Proper society built their splendid Victorian houses on the uptown bluffs—clearly distinct from the shenanigans down below on the waterfront.
At one point, more cargo passed through P.T. than through New York City. It was the US Customs Port of Entry for the Northwest and all incoming ships had to stop in Port Townsend. The speculated population of 40,000 didn’t happen because Northern Pacific decided to end its railroad in Tacoma. The population dropped to less than 1,600 people from 6,000 –7,000, leaving behind the legacy of the elaborate Victorian era. In the 1960s, Port Townsend became a Mecca for hippies and artists who gave it the artistic flavor that remains today.

Sea Dreams cottage is in a prime location to experience the best Port Townsend has to offer.
The Uptown area is located on the bluff above the historic waterfront area. Breath-taking views of the mountain ranges, the waterfront, and historic buildings are on every block. A perfect day would begin with a short walk to the downtown area's many art, gift and clothing shops, followed with a stroll through the marina and its facinating collection of seagoing vessels. To wrap it all up, you might bring home some fresh seafood from the Key City Fish Company (Boat Haven) to cook in the gourmet kitchen.
